Visual and Creative Arts Department
“The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science”. Albert Einstein
We are surrounded by art on a daily basis. Our St. Andrew’s learners experience four types of practical work in Grade 10, namely drawing, sculpture, painting, and printmaking. At the end of Grade 10, learners choose a discipline and continue with it into Grade 11 and 12. The learners have an opportunity to expand their knowledge in multi-media, mixed-media and installation if they so choose.
Learners acquire skills in time management, creative skills, management of resources and communication.
The Art department also has an Art Club that can be attended by the Grade 8 and 9 learners once a week as an extra curricula.
Part of the school curriculum is the many tours and trips on which the students are taken. Many of these are with the aim of expanding and broadening their cultural horizons. Some of the most popular of these have been overseas trips to many well-known art destinations such as Rome and Amsterdam. We also do local tours such as the Makhanda (Grahamstown) Arts Festival, or even the local arts scene in Clarens. Once a year our students are also afforded the opportunity to enter various art competitions such as the ATKV in which they can work in obtaining their cultural colours.
Art is something worth cherishing, admiring, understanding and adoring. It has captivated, amused and inspired many in diverse aspects. Art is like origami: it is complicated, expressive, yet simple. It also takes on the form of others’ beliefs, criticism and style. Artworks can be disguised by the many layers they exhibit, revealing hidden messages only some can decipher.
St Andrew’s Art Department looks forward to cherishing and developing your child’s creativity!
